Figs, as popularly known as “Anjeer” in India, is one of the oldest fruit grown on this planet. It is a seasonal fruit. Fresh figs are not available throughout the year, but dried figs are available anywhere and in every season.


This fruit possess numerous health benefits as it is loaded with lot of vitamins, minerals and fiber, such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, etc.


A few of the health benefits of figs are discussed below:


  • Relieves constipation: It contains both soluble and insoluble fiber, which promote healthy and regular bowel movement and prevents constipation.

  • Lowers cholesterol: It contains phenol, omega-3, and omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids lowers down the bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and thereby preventing the person to suffer from heart diseases.

  • Weight loss: Dried figs apart from their fiber content are also low in calories. It is a satisfying fruit and gives a fuller feeling for a longer time.

  • Prevents Hypertension: Hypertension occurs due to high sodium intake and less potassium intake. Fig contains more amount of potassium and less sodium, which keeps a check on blood pressure levels.

  • Strengthen bones: It’s high calcium content makes your bones healthy and strong, thus preventing osteoporosis. About 8-10 figs contain as much as calcium as one glass of milk.

  • Prevents diabetes: It’s high potassium content stabilizes the blood sugar levels. Fig leaves given in the breakfast daily to the diabetic patients reduce the amount of insulin needed in the form of injections. So this fruit should be added in the diet of a diabetic patient.


But as they say, excess of everything is bad. It can cause diarrhea or rashes if eaten too many, so enjoy this fruit in moderation.
